Continuing to ask the question of why Jesus would tell the disciples a certain parable, the end of chapter 19 has Peter tell Jesus that they have given everything up to follow him. Peter wants to know what they will get. That conversation happens right after being told by Jesus that it will be easier for a camel to get through the eye of a needle than a rich man into heaven. Peter wants to know what they, the disciples, are going to get as their reward for following Jesus, and for doing so from the very start.
And so, Jesus tells them this parable. What is the message for the disciples? What is the message for disciples today? How have we gotten it wrong through the years? How have we gotten it right? How well do we live into this parable’s message now?
