March 21, 2021 – Seeing Jesus – The Fifth Sunday in Lent

Luke 18:31—19:10

There are three acts in this passage that all have a similar theme. The start of the passage has Jesus talking to the disciples about what will happen in Jerusalem. It isn’t great news, and the disciples don’t understand it. Luke even says that the meaning is hidden from them. They get that Jesus is special, but they don’t get the rest of it.

From there we move with Jesus and the disciples, and pass by those on the side of the road. The blind man sees Jesus clearly. In Jesus he sees hope. Somehow, he sees Jesus that clearly, and will not be shut down, or shunted off to the side. Seeing Jesus as his hope allows him to physically see Jesus. His faith changes how he sees the world.

Then we get to Zacchaeus. He also wants to see Jesus. To do so, he climbs a tree. He sees Jesus, and Jesus sees him. He is transformed, and offers up something new. There are different things that happen in each of these stories. Where do you see yourself in this? Where have you been?
