Genesis 39:1-23 Joseph in Prison

We’ve jumped forward several (4) generations by the time we get to this story. Joseph is down In Egypt, sold by his brothers to his cousins, and then sold to Potiphar. And things seem to be turning around for Joseph. He gains respect and responsibility in the household, becoming the overseer of the house. It seems like he has come out smelling like a rose.

And then the story turns. Joseph refuses his owner’s wife’s advances. One day, she grabs his clothes, he runs away, and she accuses him of acting inappropriately. Potiphar (no longer named) believes his wife, and throws Joseph into prison. In prison Joseph also rises to a place of responsibility. There is much story after this.

We hear repeatedly that God is with Joseph and showing him steadfast love, and that all things prosper in his hands. Is this what that looks like? Is the Joseph story a story of God’s steadfast love and presence? If so, do we want to sign up for that? If not, what is this all about? How do we see and feel God’s presence and support? Does it go with us to all these places?
