March 29, 2020 – The Fifth Sunday of Lent – Before it Collapses

Mark 13:1-8, 24-37

Coming out of the temple, the disciples are impressed by the size of the stones. They are impressed by the size of the buildings. Jesus is less than impressed. Jesus promises that one day, stone will not stay upon stone. That disturbs Peter, James, John, and Andrew. They want to know when this will happen and how they’ll know that this is happening.

The question doesn’t get answered. Instead, Jesus challenges them not to be led astray. And then he warns them that wars, and rumors of wars will come, and conflict, and famine. These will be just the start.

What does it look like when the world we know collapses around our ears? What would be the sign? Would it be the temple collapsing, or church attendance dwindling, or …? How will we know? Will we notice?
