Genesis 12:1-9 Call of Abraham
This seems like a one on one conversation. It seems like this is just God and Abram plotting together, striking a deal and going forth. We talk about the covenant of God with Abram (or Abraham). We talk about this God being the God of Abraham, and Judaism, Christianity, and Islam being Abrahamic religions. And then verse 5 comes around, and we hear about Sarai, and Lot, and get the sense that there are more people along on this trip than we thought at first.
So we take a step back, and realize that God is making a future promise to Abram (and Sarai). They will be blessed to be a blessing. Their offspring will get this land. Of course, they have no offspring at this time. With only future blessings, blessings that he (they) will not receive, they go forth. So they go forward by stages.
Who journeys with us? What promises do we have to those who come later? How often do we tell the story of our faith as though it is just us and God? Can we believe in the promises of God in situations that don’t yet exist or aren’t yet visible? How do we see the stages of our journey, and where do we hear God calling us and sending us? Who is along the way with us?
