Luke 18:31-19:10 Zacchaeus
To See and Be Seen
Zacchaeus is a story from my childhood, and probably from many of your childhoods as well. A song that may now be running through your head, incessantly. Zaccheaus is a wee little man. A man who wants to see Jesus. And so, of course, he climbs up in the tree so that he can see Jesus, which results in a conversation with Jesus.
There’s someone else who wants to see Jesus, too. This other person hollers and makes a fuss, continuing over the hushing of the crowd, just trying to get Jesus to ‘see’ him. He wants Jesus to see him, to heal him, to allow him to see.
What does it mean to see and to be seen? Who does Jesus see? Who do we shush and impede on the way to Jesus? And who do we see?
