John 1:35-51
John is gathered with his own disciples. He’s sort of successful. He’s well known, sometimes too well known, and has people who follow him. When Jesus walks by, John points him out, “Here is the Lamb of God!” which his disciples hear, and then go follow Jesus. Jesus invites them to come and see what he is all about.
What happens is that John’s disciples become Christ’s disciples. And then Andrew tells Simon Peter, and then Philip tells Nathanael. Nathanael meets Jesus, and is then able to proclaim that Jesus is the son of God. We tend to like the flashy conversion stories. We tend to value the flashy conversion stories. At the same time, this is how 4 of the disciples are called – not through the deafening or blinding voice of God – but through the voices of family and neighbors, of those we mentor us and who are willing to point us in the right direction.
Who is in the chain of proclamation that brought you this far? How did you get pointed to Jesus? How do we point others to Jesus so that they can make their own proclamation of faith?
