Pentecost can be a lot of fun. We use languages, and we hear languages that we often don’t hear in our day to day lives. We can imagine the chaos of the day, and we have, in our worship here. Pentecost changes lives. We see great transformation in Peter, and the crowd is convicted and converted.
Yet there’s something else going on here – Luke writes that each person heard the stories of God’s might acts in their own language, in words they could understand, and perhaps even in the words they’d use. All too often, we bog down the conversation about faith with technical terms and jargon. We talk about election and predestination, sanctification and justification, millennialism, pre-, post- and a-.
On this day of Pentecost, I’d ask this – what are the words that made this faith real for you? What are the words that make this faith real for you? What words do you use to describe your faith now? And what words should we be using?
