October 2, 2022 – Keep Still – The 17th Sunday After Pentecost

Exodus 14:5-7, 10-14, 21-29 (30-31?) The sea parts, God’s deliverance

We’ve moved forward generations again. We’ve moved from Joseph to Moses, to a Pharoah who did not know Joseph. And yet the people are imprisoned as Joseph was when we left him. Now they are running away, as Joseph ran from Potiphar’s wife, and the authority, the Pharoah and the people of Egypt, are chasing after them.

The chase gets to the people. They cry out to the Lord and to Moses, and want to know why they could not have stayed to serve, rather than die in the wilderness. And Moses tells them to do something hard. They need to keep still and let God fight for them. They need to stand firm and see what God will do to deliver them. Oh my. I am glad I wasn’t there.

What they see is Moses stretching out his hand towards the waters, and the people move out, and are followed. As the Egyptians get mired down, they see that God is at work. The waters return, and destroy the Egyptians.

How well do we wait for God? How well do we keep still when the hordes are at the gates? How would we respond to being told to keep still? How do we see God’s deliverance?
