Exodus 19:3-7, 20:1-17
We don’t get a ton of chances to make an actual fresh start in life. As much as we like to think our past doesn’t follow us, our grades, our history, our behavior, it often stays with us, even if it isn’t visible to anyone else. Here, in the wilderness, the people of God get a chance to start over. Now of course they know one another, which could be good or bad, but God is setting the table for them to start fresh, which will mean breaking some bad habits.
Into this reset comes God with these two messages. God has delivered the people and brought them to himself, and they shall be his treasured possession (if). To be the people of God, this is how they should live. These are a contrast – do we hear the contrast, or are these just normal? What does it mean that these are what God tells God’s people to start from?
